De Lift (DVD, PAL, Region 2)
De Lift is the classic 1983 Dutch horror thriller written and directed by Dick Maas, starring Huub Stapel as elevator mechanic Felix Adelaar.
After four people mysteriously die inside an elevator in a large office building, Felix is called in to investigate. He initially finds no obvious technical fault, but the situation becomes increasingly disturbing when further bizarre and violent incidents occur. Convinced that something is seriously wrong with the elevator, Felix begins investigating beyond the normal mechanical explanations.
Together with journalist Mieke de Beer, played by Willeke van Ammelrooy, he uncovers a frightening mystery surrounding the building's lift system. What begins as a technical investigation gradually develops into a sinister and increasingly dangerous confrontation.
De Lift became one of Dick Maas's best-known films and an important title in Dutch horror cinema. Its unusual killer-elevator premise, dark atmosphere and mixture of suspense and horror helped the film gain recognition beyond the Netherlands. Maas later revisited the concept with the English-language film Down.
Cover language: Dutch. The film is Dutch spoken with English subtitles.
