Quills (VHS, PAL)
Quills is a provocative 2000 historical drama directed by Philip Kaufman, featuring an acclaimed cast led by Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix and Michael Caine.
Set in Napoleonic France, the film follows the notorious Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush) during his confinement in the Charenton asylum. Despite imprisonment, the Marquis remains determined to circulate his controversial writings to the outside world. His young laundress Madeleine (Kate Winslet) becomes involved in secretly carrying his manuscripts beyond the asylum walls, while the compassionate Abbé du Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix) struggles to maintain order.
When the authorities decide that stronger measures are required, the severe Dr. Royer-Collard (Michael Caine) arrives, creating an increasingly intense conflict between censorship, authority, artistic expression and personal desire.
Geoffrey Rush's performance as the Marquis de Sade received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and the film received three Academy Award nominations overall.
