The Way (DVD, PAL, Region 2)
The Way is a moving 2010 drama written and directed by Emilio Estevez, starring Martin Sheen alongside Estevez, Deborah Kara Unger, Yorick van Wageningen and James Nesbitt.
Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who travels to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France following the death of his son. Rather than simply returning home, Tom makes a deeply personal decision: he will complete the journey his son had begun along the historic Camino de Santiago, carrying his son's ashes with him.
What begins as a solitary pilgrimage gradually becomes a journey of friendship, grief and personal discovery as Tom encounters other travellers along the Camino. Set against the landscapes of France and Spain on the route toward Santiago de Compostela, the film combines road-movie elements with an intimate story about family, loss and finding new meaning in life.
