Escape from Auschwitz (DVD, Region 2, PAL)
Escape from Auschwitz is a powerful and deeply moving historical documentary recounting the extraordinary true story of Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, two young Jewish prisoners who successfully escaped from the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp during the Second World War.
Through dramatic reconstructions, historical accounts and documentary storytelling, this production explores one of the most significant escapes in Holocaust history and the determination of two men to reveal the terrible reality of Nazi persecution and mass murder.
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, both originally from what was then Czechoslovakia, achieved what many prisoners had attempted but very few had survived: escaping from Auschwitz.
At a time when the Nazi regime was systematically murdering millions of people across occupied Europe, the true extent of the atrocities committed inside Auschwitz remained largely concealed from the outside world.
Vrba and Wetzler understood that escaping was only the beginning of their mission. Their objective was to reach safety and provide detailed eyewitness testimony about the camp's operations, including the systematic deportation and murder of Jewish prisoners.
Their escape required extraordinary courage, careful planning and immense physical and psychological endurance. The documentary follows their dangerous journey beyond the camp's heavily guarded perimeter and their efforts to communicate what they had witnessed.
Their testimony became known as the Vrba–Wetzler Report, one of the most important eyewitness documents produced during the Holocaust. The report helped expose the machinery of mass murder at Auschwitz and contributed to international awareness of the atrocities taking place under Nazi occupation.
Produced for Channel 4, Escape from Auschwitz combines historical reconstruction with factual documentary material to present a compelling account of survival, resistance and the importance of bearing witness.
The documentary offers valuable historical insight into the conditions inside Auschwitz, the dangers faced by prisoners attempting to escape and the wider significance of the information that Vrba and Wetzler brought to the outside world.
