Hero (DVD, Region 2, PAL)
Hero, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, is a visually striking martial arts epic starring Jet Li alongside an exceptional cast including Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi, Donnie Yen and Chen Daoming.
Set during ancient China's Warring States period, the story follows a nameless warrior who arrives at the court of the King of Qin claiming to have defeated three of the kingdom's most dangerous assassins: Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Sky. As he recounts how he overcame each legendary fighter, the truth behind his extraordinary story gradually begins to unfold.
Renowned for its spectacular sword fighting, elaborate choreography, cinematography and distinctive use of colour, Hero combines large-scale historical drama with elegant wuxia action. Jet Li and Donnie Yen's confrontation is one of the film's standout martial arts sequences, while the story explores themes of sacrifice, loyalty, truth and the unification of China.
