The Card Player (2004), originally titled Il cartaio, is an Italian crime-horror thriller directed by legendary filmmaker Dario Argento, the acclaimed director of Suspiria, Inferno, Deep Red and Tenebrae. Starring Stefania Rocca, Liam Cunningham and Silvio Muccino, the film combines psychological suspense, brutal murders and a disturbing game of life and death.
Rome is terrorised by a mysterious serial killer who challenges the police to a deadly online card game. Detective Anna Mari (Stefania Rocca) is assigned to investigate the case, but the situation quickly becomes a terrifying psychological battle when the murderer contacts her directly.
The killer forces the police to participate in online poker games while kidnapped victims are held captive in front of a webcam. Every lost game has horrifying consequences, and the investigators must watch helplessly as the murderer carries out his threats.
Working alongside British detective John Brennan (Liam Cunningham), Anna desperately searches for clues that could reveal the killer's identity. As the stakes rise and the victims continue to disappear, the investigation becomes an increasingly dangerous race against time.
Blending elements of traditional Italian giallo cinema with modern technology, The Card Player explores the terrifying possibilities of cybercrime, psychological manipulation and voyeuristic violence. Dario Argento's distinctive visual style, unsettling atmosphere and suspenseful storytelling make this an intriguing addition to his extensive horror filmography.
This Dutch FilmWorks DVD edition features the film in PAL widescreen format (1.85:1), with English-language audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Surround Sound, accompanied by Dutch subtitles.
