Kenau (2014) is a powerful Dutch historical action drama directed by Maarten Treurniet, starring Monic Hendrickx, Barry Atsma, Sallie Harmsen and Sophie van Winden.
Set during the Eighty Years' War, the film tells the story of Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer, a courageous woman who became a legendary figure in Dutch history through her resistance against Spanish forces during the Siege of Haarlem.
A Woman Who Refused to Surrender
Haarlem, December 1572. The Spanish army, commanded by the Duke of Alba, is determined to crush the Dutch rebellion. As the city prepares for an inevitable siege, Kenau Hasselaer (Monic Hendrickx), a widowed shipbuilder, initially wants nothing to do with the growing conflict.
However, when her youngest daughter becomes involved in the resistance and falls into Spanish hands, Kenau can no longer remain on the sidelines.
Determined to protect her family and defend her city, she helps strengthen Haarlem's fortifications and organizes a group of courageous women willing to fight alongside the city's defenders.
As the Spanish forces close in, Kenau and her fellow fighters face overwhelming odds, internal disagreements and difficult personal sacrifices.
Meanwhile, military commander Wigbolt Ripperda (Barry Atsma) must decide how best to defend Haarlem against the advancing Spanish army.
With impressive historical settings, dramatic battle sequences and strong performances, Kenau brings one of the most remarkable chapters of Dutch history to life.
The film explores courage, loyalty, family, resistance and the important role women played during the struggle for Dutch independence.
