Save the Last Dance is a romantic dance drama starring Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, combining teenage romance, personal loss and the contrasting worlds of ballet and hip-hop.
Sara Johnson, played by Julia Stiles, is a talented young dancer from a small town whose greatest ambition is to become a professional ballerina. Her life changes dramatically when her mother, one of the strongest supporters of her dream, unexpectedly dies in a car accident. Overcome with grief, Sara abandons her ballet ambitions and moves to Chicago to live with her estranged father.
Starting over at a new school proves difficult, but Sara gradually forms a friendship with Chenille, played by Kerry Washington. Through Chenille she meets her brother Derek, played by Sean Patrick Thomas, a bright and ambitious student who shares Sara's passion for dance.
Derek introduces Sara to a completely different style of dancing and helps her discover the world of hip-hop. As the two spend more time together, their friendship develops into a romance. Their relationship, however, is challenged by social pressures, cultural differences and the prejudices of people around them.
With Derek's encouragement, Sara begins to rediscover her confidence and confront the painful memories that caused her to abandon ballet. By combining her classical dance training with her newly discovered passion for hip-hop, she prepares to pursue her dream once again.
Directed by Thomas Carter, Save the Last Dance became one of the best-known dance-oriented teen dramas of the early 2000s. This Region 2 PAL DVD presents the film in 1.85:1 widescreen, with Dolby Digital audio, extensive European subtitle support and several bonus features.
